FREQUENTLY ASKED · ALOITA RESORT · MENTAWAI ISLANDS

Questions & answers.

Everything you need to know about staying at Aloita Resort. If you can't find what you're looking for, get in touch — we're happy to help.
GETTING HERE

Travel & transfers.

How do I get to Aloita Resort?
Fly to Padang (PDG) in West Sumatra, then take the Mentawai Fast Ferry to Tua Pejat. Our team meets you at the port and transfers you by speedboat to the resort — around 15 minutes. We offer a transfer package covering all logistics from Padang airport.
What days does the ferry run?
The fast ferry departs Padang on Wednesdays and Fridays at 7am, and Sundays at 10am. Returns from Tua Pejat on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays. Crossing approximately 3.5–4 hours. Surfboards travel easily on the ferry.
Do I need to stay overnight in Padang?
Yes — the ferry departs early morning, so plan to arrive in Padang the evening before. On the return, the ferry arrives in Padang around 7pm and there are no same-day flights available, so an overnight stay is also required on your way home.
What is included in the transfer package?
USD 100 per person each way. Includes airport transfers, Fast Ferry ticket, and speedboat transfer to the resort. Accommodation in Padang is not included.
Are there other ways to get to Aloita?
Yes — private speedboat from Padang, private charter flight to Mentawai Airport (30 minutes from Padang), or private jet. Get in touch and we can help arrange alternatives.
What currency is used at the resort?
We accept major credit cards and USD. There are no ATMs on Simakakang — if you need local currency (IDR), exchange or withdraw cash in Padang before departure.
THE RESORT

General questions.

What is included in the nightly rate?
All meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner), complimentary morning yoga, use of snorkel gear, kayaks, and stand-up paddles, fresh coconuts, and access to all resort facilities including the bar, TV room, library, table tennis, and billiards.
Is there wifi at Aloita Resort?
Yes — wifi is available in the common areas. There is no wifi in the villas — a deliberate choice. Most guests stop noticing after the first day.
What are the check-in and check-out days?
Check-in and check-out are on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays only — due to ferry schedules.
When is Aloita Resort open?
We are open almost year round. We close in November — typically the rainiest month of the year. We also do not accept group bookings in July and August.
What is the best time to visit?
The Mentawais can be visited almost year round. April to October tends to be the most popular time, with the most consistent surf and weather. Outside of this period the resort is quieter and more peaceful.
ACCOMMODATION

Villas & staying.

Are the villas beachfront?
Yes — all villas have direct beach access with the ocean immediately in front, surrounded by palms and beach gazebos.
How many guests does Aloita Resort accommodate?
Aloita has 10 beachfront villas accommodating a small number of guests at a time — keeping it quiet, personal, and uncrowded.
What villas are available?
Villa Aloita (1 bedroom, sleeps up to 3), Villa Murimanua (2 bedrooms, sleeps up to 5), Villa Ka Koat (3 bedrooms, sleeps up to 6), Villa Simagere (3 bedrooms, sleeps up to 8), and Sunset Villa (2 bedrooms, private beach, sleeps up to 6).
Is Aloita Resort suitable for non-surfers?
Absolutely — many guests come specifically for the island experience, activities, and pace of life. Surfing is one part of what Aloita offers.
What is Sunset Villa?
Sunset Villa is a private two-bedroom villa on the west side of Simakakang Island — ten minutes by boat from the main resort, on its own stretch of beach. It comes with a dedicated host, private boat and captain, and full access to all Aloita Resort amenities. The same Aloita feeling, completely undisturbed. Sleeps up to 6 guests.
What is Makakan?
Makakan is a separate brand and exclusive-use property created by the founders of Aloita Resort — an architect-designed private estate in the Mentawai Islands. Not a resort, not a hotel. A completely different experience, designed for those wanting total seclusion and a more architectural setting. Entirely yours. Visit makakan.com to find out more.
SURFING

Waves & surf pass.

Do I need a surf pass to surf at Aloita?
Not necessarily. The surf pass is for intermediate and advanced surfers who want to join our guided boat trips to the outer breaks — twice daily, with an experienced guide. If you're a beginner looking for lessons, those are arranged separately. And if you just want to surf our home break right in front of the resort, you don't need a pass — we run a boat for drop-offs.
What waves are near Aloita Resort?
Tikus is our home break — 800 metres from the resort. Within a short boat ride: Telescopes, Scarecrows, Icelands, G4's, Ombak Tidur, and more.
Is Tikus good for beginners?
Yes — Tikus is a mellow left-hander that works for all levels. Gentle and forgiving, with a safe channel. One of the best beginner waves in the Mentawais.
What does the surf pass include?
Two guided boat sessions per day to the best breaks in the area, with an experienced surf guide. Optional surf photography available. USD 79 per person per day pre-booked, USD 100 on arrival. Days must be consecutive and maximum 18 surfers per day.
Is there surf coaching available?
Yes — we offer coaching for intermediate and advanced surfers alongside lessons for beginners. Sessions can be arranged on arrival or in advance.
What is the Mentawai surf tax?
Surfers arriving with surfboards are required to pay a government surf tax of IDR 2,000,000 (approx. USD 130) at Tua Pejat port on arrival. The tax is valid for 15 days and is collected directly by the Mentawai Tourism Office.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Transport

In order to get to Aloita, you have to reach Padang (Sumatra) and take a ferry to Tua Pejat, the Mentawai capital where our crew will take you to Aloita by private speed boat (15 minutes). We organise an ALL-IN Transfer Package from Padang Airport to Aloita.

Currently the best way to get to Padang is to fly from Jakarta (with Garuda or Lion Air) or Kuala Lumpur (with Air Asia). Once in Padang Airport you have two options:

A. Organize your own transfer to Tua Pejat (capital port of the Mentawais) where you will be greeted by our staff and transferred by speedboat to Aloita.

B. Book the Transfer Package and let us take care of everything for you. This includes all transfers from Padang airport to your hotel and to the harbour the following morning, 15 kg luggage allowance, 15 kg board bag (1 piece) and porters.

The accommodation in Padang is not included in our Transfer Package.

The Mentawai Fast ferry departs from Padang every Monday, Wednesday, Friday at 7 am and every Sunday at 10:00 am and arrives in the Mentawais approximately 3 and half hours later.
On return, the Mentawai Fast ferry departs from the Mentawais every Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday at 3:00 pm and arrives in Padang approximately at 6:30 pm.

Due to flight scheduling you will likely have to stay one night in Padang on the way back also. Please plan your dates accordingly.

Important Notice & Liability Disclaimer

Please be aware that boat transfer is the only available means of transport between Tua Pejat and Aloita. While we prioritize safety and work with experienced crews, travel by sea inherently involves risks, including but not limited to changing weather conditions, ocean swells, and mechanical issues.

By booking a transfer with us, you acknowledge and accept that Aloita is not liable for any injury, loss, damage, delay, or inconvenience that may occur during ferry or speedboat transfers, regardless of cause — including natural events such as waves or rough seas.

We strongly recommend that all guests obtain comprehensive travel insurance that covers trip delays, cancellations, medical emergencies, and baggage loss.

Yes, as the Mentawai Fast ferry leaves from Padang early in the morning ( 7 am), and most of the flights to Padang arrive after 7 am.

The Mentawai Fast ferry departs from Padang every Monday, Wednesday, Friday at 7am and every Sunday at 10:00 am and arrives in the Mentawais approximately 3 and half hours later.

On return, the Mentawai Fast ferry departs from the Mentawais every Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday at 3:00 pm and arrives in Padang approximately at 6:30 pm.

No, the accommodation in Padang is not included in our Transfer Package. We recommend Mercure Padang Hotel (www.mercurepadang.com) as it is not far from the harbor and it is possibly the best option available.

At the harbour there is no way to load/unload your bags without the help of porters. Price depends on number of bags and boards. If you chose our TRANSFER PACKAGE porters are included. Bargaining with porters can be unpleasant, therefore we recommend choosing one of our packages to avoid possible misunderstandings.

It includes all transfers from Padang airport to Aloita and return, including the taxi to your hotel and to the harbour the following morning, the Mentawai Fast ferry ticket (with 15 kg luggage allowance and 1 surfboard bag for surfers – max 15 kg), porters, and our speed boat to/from Aloita

The Mentawai Fast ferry arrives in Padang around 6:30 pm, when most of the flights out of Padang have already left.

If the ferry is on time and traffic allows it, it is possible though to catch the last flight to Jakarta. Any delay could result in having to spend one night in Padang.

Though the Mentawai Fast ferry is the most reliable transport to the Mentawais, it is not the only one. Suzi air flies out of Padang twice per week. And it is also possible to charter a private plane.

Entry into Indonesia requires a passport valid for at least 6 months from the date of arrival.

Visitors from most countries do not require a visa. A 30-day tourist visa on arrival still applies for some countries (35 USD). Another option is to apply at the Indonesian embassy in your country for a 60-day tourist visa. Please check with your embassy.

Health

For your personal safety, travel insurance with medical evacuation coverage is mandatory. In case of an emergency, we will assist you in contacting your insurance company.

Aloita strongly recommends that all guests purchase a Global Rescue membership and separate travel insurance to protect their health, safety and trip investment while traveling to our remote island location. Global Rescue provides 24/7 field rescue, medical evacuation and advisory services with no activity restrictions (including surfing, diving and other adventure sports), while travel insurance covers trip cancellation, delays, baggage and medical expenses. Please note that Aloita is not responsible for costs related to medical treatment, evacuation or trip disruption; without appropriate coverage, these expenses must be paid directly by the guest. We partner with Global Rescue, a worldwide leader in field rescue, medical evacuation and travel risk management; you can learn more and purchase membership directly on their website here: https://partner.globalrescue.com/aloitaresort/index.html

We have a first aid kit on premises, however we strongly recommend bringing your own medications. In particular, an antiseptic to clean cuts and antibiotics in case of infection. Aloita does not have a doctor on site. There is a local hospital in Tua Pejat (half hour away).

Mosquito bites can bring several diseases, so personal precautions are suggested. Risk of contracting malaria is extremely low in the Mentawai Islands.

Surf

The Surf Pass includes 2 daily surf sessions by boat, accompanied by our surf guide. Optional surf photography packages are available.  It costs 79 USD. Days should be chosen in advance, as the number of surfers at Aloita is restricted to 18 people. Days must be consecutive.

Yes it is! Our home break is very suitable to learn to surf, fun and seldom crowded. At high tide the reef is safe without any strong current and generally the waves are just perfect for beginners. Our team of instructors will take care of all your needs in order to make your water time safe and enjoyable.

Yes you can. Indonesia customs allow a maximum of 3 surfboards per person (additional boards will be considered imports and will be charged approx. 100 USD per board). Our Transfer Package includes 1 board bag (3 boards, 15 Kg).

We suggest to bring sun protection, extra leashes, spare fins, warm water wax, a rush vest or a light neoprene jacket, surf booties (if you feel that you need them then you probably do, always better to have them and not to use them), a dry bag and a wind stop or rain jacket for boat rides.

Yes you can, though we highly suggest you purchase it at the moment of the booking. If chosen in Aloita availability is not guaranteed, and the price is 95 USD instead of 79 USD regardless if you participate to 1 or 2 sessions per day.

Absolutely! Our surf guides will assess your skill and level and, depending on weather and swell conditions, either enroll you on the surf boat or perhaps do some coaching in order to improve your performance.

Yes you can. We offer a variety of surf boards for rentals: Shortboards (5.10 to 6.4; 24 to 32 litres), Minimals (7.0 to 9.0), Soft tops (shared with the Surf School) and a few Longboards (8.0 to 9.3). We are confident that our selection will satisfy your taste and skills.

All surfers must pay a surfing tax of 2.000.000 Idr (approx.125 USD) to the Mentawai Tourism Office. We will collect and pay it for you once you are in Aloita. The tax is valid for 15 days.

Weather

Aloita's unique location near the Equator ensures a consistent climate throughout the year, characterized by warm, humid days that seamlessly blend into slightly cooler evenings. This equatorial setting means the weather patterns remain relatively stable, offering an endless summer vibe that's perfect for vacationing at any time of the year.

While occasional tropical storms can sweep through, bringing refreshing rains and a dramatic display of nature's power, these are typically short-lived and often contribute to the lush, vibrant landscape that makes this region so breathtaking.

The warm waters and gentle breezes are perfect for snorkeling, paddleboarding, and swimming, ensuring that the tropical paradise of Aloita is a year-round haven for adventurers and relaxation seekers alike.

The advanced beginner or intermediate surfer should consider bringing an all round board with bigger size and lots of volume, especially if you are coming from a long period without surfing. This kind of board will allow you to get that extra paddling strength on the surf and will also help you catch more waves.

Bring also a shorter high performance board as well to start testing your skills once you start getting into the rhythm. Trust us: you will appreciate that extra volume and extra inches on the more demanding days, especially if you are not a consummated charger.

Aloita serves farm to table food created by international guest chefs

We source fish directly from local fishermen, guaranteeing Aloita's dishes feature the freshest catch. Our fruits, vegetables, and herbs, including basil and mint, are also locally sourced. This commitment to local suppliers enriches our dining with authentic Mentawai flavors.

All the meals we serve at our Resort are prepared by International guest chefs who visit us on a regular basis and leave their best signature dishes and recipes with us.

We happily accommodate guests with dietary restrictions such as vegetarian, vegan and gluten intolerance, as that’s also a part of who we are.

Public Fast ferry transfer

Opt for the hassle-free experience by booking our Fast ferry TRANSFER PACKAGE, allowing us to seamlessly manage every detail for you. This comprehensive package covers all transfers, beginning from your arrival at Padang airport to your hotel and, the following morning, to the harbor.

You'll enjoy a smooth journey with the Mentawai Fast ferry, inclusive of a generous 15 kg luggage allowance.

For surfers, we also accommodate one board bag (15 kg), taking the worry out of transporting your equipment.
