Mentawai Surf Spots Near Aloita

Some of the most consistent, perfectly shaped waves in the world — from mellow reef breaks to world-class barrels, often at the same spot on the same day.

Surf map

The Mentawai Islands are home to some of the most consistent, perfectly shaped waves in the world. The surf here is powerful and varied. While the Mentawais are known for world-class waves, smaller swells also create opportunities for intermediate surfers to explore and progress across a range of different breaks.

ALL LEVELS

Tikus.

Our home break. 800 metres from the resort.
type
Left-hander, reef break.
BEST TIDE
Higher and mid tide when small. All tides with more size.
BEST SWELL
Works with almost all directions.
BEST WIND
South or southeast. No wind ideal.
BEST FOR
Beginners, improvers, longboarders, all levels
Our home break sits directly in front of the island — a mellow left-hander that offers good waves almost every day.

The wave breaks across three different peaks, making it versatile for all skill levels. Ideal for beginners, improvers, and longboarders — classic, fast, forgiving peelers in a relaxed environment close to the resort.

When bigger swells arrive, Tikus transforms. Good drops, fast peeling sections, and barrels open up for more advanced surfers. It performs best at higher and mid tides when small, and handles all tides well with more size. Works with almost all swell directions — prefers south or southeast winds, or no wind at all.

Guests can walk to the break in minutes or use complimentary boat drop-offs and pickups throughout the day.
mentawai surf resort-intermediate surf package experience
surfing for beginners at aloita resort
A world-class left-hander set against a tiny, picture-perfect island. Reliable, powerful, long, and photogenic — one of our most frequented spots because it works most of the time.

Works at all sizes and tides, though better on a dropping tide. On bigger days the inside bowl delivers outstanding barrels. Smaller days are accessible for intermediate surfers.

On the smallest swells we occasionally bring beginners for lessons on this beautiful reef. At low tide some sections get shallow — be careful on wipeouts. The channel snorkelling here is exceptional.

Left-hander, reef pass.
BEST TIDE
Moving low to high, or dropping tide.
BEST SWELL
West swells. Southwest also works.
BEST WIND
Light offshore.
BEST FOR
Intermediate to advanced. Longboarding on small days.
One of the most sought-after waves in the Mentawais. A fast, hollow left-hander that bends almost 180 degrees into a hollow reef pass — the bigger the swell, the better it gets.

Works best on a moving low to high tide, or on a dropping tide. West swells are best, though southwest swells also deliver. Long, fast barrels are the norm, but Telescopes also rewards high-performance surfing.

On its best days it's demanding — but on medium and smaller days it's also surprisingly forgiving and fun for intermediate surfers. On very small days it becomes an excellent longboarding wave.
The channel offers one of the best spectator views in the Mentawais.
INTERMEDIATE — ADVANCED

Icelands.

A powerful wave magnet. Works with almost anything.
type
Left-hander, deep water reef.
BEST TIDE
Moving low to incoming tide.
BEST SWELL
Almost any direction.
BEST WIND
East, northeast, southeast.
BEST FOR
Intermediate on small days. Advanced when big.
A powerful, consistent wave magnet. Strong left peaks with powerful, peeling sections and barrels over a sharp but deep-water reef. Short but intense. Works with almost any swell direction.

At mid-range size it's challenging but accessible. When big it's a serious, demanding wave suited only for advanced, fit surfers — bring your bigger board and don't get caught inside by the clean-up sets.

At smaller sizes it becomes a fun, peaky wave ideal for intermediate surfers practicing drops and turns. Some nice right-handers also appear here on smaller days.

G4's

A hidden gem close to the resort.
type
Left-hander, reef break.
BEST TIDE
Lower tides.
BEST SWELL
All sizes. Bigger the better.
BEST WIND
Straight southerlies.
BEST FOR
Speed, rail work, high-performance turns.
A fast, perfectly peeling left-hander over a forgiving reef — close to the resort and often overlooked. G4 breaks at all sizes and rewards surfers willing to put in time reading the spot.

Needs good straight southerly winds and lower tides. The bigger the swell, the better it gets.
A good wave for practicing speed, rail work, and high-performance turns.
A complex right-hander with multiple sections and peaks that behave differently depending on swell, conditions, and size. The reef is forgiving and friendly.

On mid-sized and smaller days it produces excellent, fun peeling rights. On bigger days it's more demanding. Getting caught inside is uncomfortable — good duck diving skills help.

Prefers west swells, glassy conditions, or north to northeast winds. Likes higher tides.
INTERMEDIATE — ADVANCED

Ombak Tidur.

Complex, varied, rewarding.
type
Right-hander, multiple peaks.
BEST TIDE
Higher tides,
BEST SWELL
West swells preferred.
BEST WIND
Glassy. North to northeast.
BEST FOR

Suicides.

Fast, shallow, not for the faint-hearted.
type
Right-hander, shallow reef.
BEST TIDE
Mid to high tide only.
BEST SWELL
North or northeast.
BEST WIND
East, northeast, southeast.
BEST FOR
Advanced surfers only.
A fast, shallow, racing right-hander for advanced surfers only. Surfed at mid to high tides — hollow and steep from the take-off, with clean sections ideal for high-performance surfing.

Likes north or northeast winds. If you can handle shallow water this is a radical, fun spot. Gets big and hollow on its best days.

Further down the reef sits Ariks — considered by some to be the best right-hander in the area when it's working. Very fickle and hard to score, but on the right day it delivers long, static barrels.
INTERMEDIATE — ADVANCED

Seven Palms.

The wave that saves a flat day. A fast, technical left-hander tucked into a secluded cove — Seven Palms works when everywhere else doesn't. Quick walls, clean turns, and the occasional barrel. Likes southeast wind and higher tides. Good for longboarding on smaller swells.
ADVANCED

Suicides Left.

Big, hollow, shallow, and fast. One of the most consequential waves in the Mentawais — this is not a wave you stumble into. World-class surfer Anthony Walsh calls it his favourite spot in the area. If the conditions align and you have the commitment, it will be the wave of your trip.
INTERMEDIATE — ADVANCED

Hookers.

A long, scenic left-hander hidden inside a tropical cove bay. The point break setup produces fast sections and peeling walls with multiple take-off zones — on a solid SW swell the sections connect into one of the longer rides in the area. Southeast wind is essential. A classic intermediate wave that turns freight train on bigger days.

SURF SEASONS

The Mentawais receive waves year-round.

PEAK SEASON

May to September

The most consistent swell and largest surf. Best for experienced surfers seeking the classic Mentawai experience.
SHOULDER SEASON

October

Can still offer excellent conditions with fewer crowds and more variation in the lineup.
QUIETER SEASON

January to March

Usually smaller and calmer — ideal for guests looking for a more relaxed island experience. Fun surf still very possible.

Telescopes.

The cherry on the pie. Tele’s is the gem everybody is seeking to score. When its on, it’s a fast and hollow left hander that bends almost 180 degrees into this hollow reef pass. The bigger the better and more perfect it gets. It works best on a moving low to high or on a dropping tide. West swells are always better but it also gets good with a southwest swell.

This wave has so many different moods and faces and it can be tricky at times. It can provide you with the thrill of a lifetime, if you manage to find that good rhythm with ocean and start scoring one perfect wave after the other. Long fast barrels are the norm here but its also a wave suited for high performance. Demanding and gnarly on the best and biggest days, it is also very forgiving and super fun on the medium and smaller days.

If we are lucky and cruise in the right vibe, we can find some classic smaller days with perfect racing lefts and very few people in the lineup. It’s all a matter of good sync and timing with this wave! Also a very good longboarding wave on those super small days.
We all love Telescopes!! Also great show to watch from the channel, while sipping on a coconut or a cold Bintang.

G4’S

One of our hidden gems and very close to our resort. G4 is a fast peeling, beautiful, racing left hander that breaks over a very forgiving and nice reef. It will break at all sizes and it needs good straight southerlies winds and lower tides. The bigger the better. Usually over looked, this is a super fun wave and it’s a good spot to start training your skills, test that new board and practice those high speed hacks.

Scarecrows

Reliable, beautiful, powerful, long, photogenic, blue, and incredibly fun left-hander. One of our favorite spots. Set on an awesome reef pass amidst a tiny, dreamy island, Scarecrows is a world-class wave. We surf here often because it's good most of the time. Everyone gets waves...a lot of waves. If you're patient and learn to read the spot, you'll get heaps of waves and might even get the ride of your trip! The wave works at all sizes and tides, but it's better on a dropping tide. On bigger days, the inside bowl section delivers outstanding barrels. At low tide, some parts get shallow, so be careful on wipeouts or closeouts. Smaller days are super fun and accessible, and intermediate surfers will find this wave exciting. When the surf is small, we might take beginners for a lesson on this beautiful reef. Snorkeling in the channel is a must.

OMBAK TIDUR

This wave is a very complex right hander that behaves like a reefy shore break, it has many sections and different peaks that work on different swells, conditions and sizes. The reef here is forgiving and friendly. It’s a bit demanding on the bigger days, but it can also get you super good, super fun peeling rights on mid sized and smaller days. Getting caught inside here is not so much fun, so if you do it’s is a good spot to test your stamina and fine tune those duck diving skills. The more west the swell, the better. Glassy wind conditions or north and north easterlies are the best. It likes higher tides

SUICIDES

The name of the spot says it all. This is a very fast, very shallow, racing right hander for advanced surfers only. Surfed only at mid to high tides this wave can be super fun and you will find good hollow barrels right from the take off. Clean and steep sections ideal for high performance surf. Likes north or northeast winds. If you can handle shallow water this is a fun radical spot. It gets big and hollow sometimes. Further down the reef there is another section called Ariks. Some claim that when it is working this one is the best right hander in the area but it is very fickle and hard to score. Long static barrels can be found here if we get lucky enough.

ICELANDS

This wave is a power house and wave magnet in the area and it provides incredible and strong left peaks with powerful, peeling sections and barrels over a sharp but deep water reef. It’s is a short but intense ride and it works with almost any swell direction. It likes east, north east and south east winds and is better on a moving low to incoming tide.

It works at all sizes. At mid range size it is a very challenging but accessible wave, but when it’s big it is a really demanding and powerful spot suited only for advanced and fit surfers. When big, you should use the bigger stick on your quiver as it’s not the place you want to get caught inside by those rogue clean up sets. At smaller sizes, it’s a super fun, mellow, peaky wave, ideal for the intermediate surfer and a good place to practice your drops and turns.

You can find some nice right handers here on the smaller days. There is also a little inside slab section on the channel that can be perfect for surf lessons on higher tides.

SEVEN PALMS

Without Seven palms we would be lost on those flat days. You can always count on the good old 7P’s when the surf is super small or flat. A very technical, fast, fun and ever changing left hander, this one it is truly a lifesaver when nowhere else seems to be working. Beautifully nested in this secluded cove this wave delivers super nice walls to carve clean lines and turns. It likes the southeast or east wind and higher tides. Some days, it barrels really nicely and it might surprise you on how good it can get. Some classic sessions can be found here so this is a spot that we never underestimate. On very small days, it can be a great intermediate level wave as well. Also good for longboarding or even surf lessons.

SUICIDES LEFT

Very few surfers can successfully handle this wave. Big, hollow shallow and fast. Our regular guest, friend, Hellman, aussie world class surfer Anthony Walsh, claims this one is his favorite spot in the area. If you want perfect barrels and have the skills and the balls it is worth a try. There are a couple more waves around this area that we rarely surf because they can be very fickle and rare, but if we get lucky we might score them.

HOOKERS

Another sweet and long left hander. A very scenic, tropical, cove bay hides this beauty of a wave. Long point break setup with really fast sections and peeling walls. Because of its length, this wave offers multiple sections to choose from and can be a thrilling super long wave on those clean south west swells, when the sections can connect into a super long ride. SE wind is a must here. It’s a classic intermediate level spot. On bigger days it can provide high speed and uncrowded freight trains.

The advanced beginner or intermediate surfer should consider bringing an all round board with bigger size and lots of volume, especially if you are coming from a long period without surfing. This kind of board will allow you to get that extra paddling strength on the surf and will also help you catch more waves.

Bring also a shorter high performance board as well to start testing your skills once you start getting into the rhythm. Trust us: you will appreciate that extra volume and extra inches on the more demanding days, especially if you are not a consummated charger.
